Problems on Ages · Question 28 · Hard

A is twice as old as B was when A was as old as B is now. If the sum of their present ages is 63 years, what is A's present age?

  1. 42 years
  2. 36 years
  3. 27 years
  4. 32 years
Answer and explanation

Answer: B. 36 years

Explanation: A was B's present age (A − B) years ago, when B was B − (A − B) = 2B − A. So A = 2(2B − A), i.e. 3A = 4B. With A + B = 63, A = 36 and B = 27.
