Percentages question 5
In an election between two candidates, the winner got 58% of the votes and won by 2,400 votes. If all votes were valid, how many votes were cast in total?
- 15,000
- 12,000
- 18,000
- 20,000
Answer and explanation
Answer: A. 15,000
Explanation: The loser got 42%, so the margin is 58% − 42% = 16% of the total. 16% = 2,400 gives total = 2,400 ÷ 0.16 = 15,000.
