Time, Speed & Distance question 12

Two trains start at the same time from stations X and Y towards each other. After meeting, they take 9 hours and 4 hours respectively to reach Y and X. What is the ratio of the speed of the train from X to that of the train from Y?

  1. 9 : 4
  2. 4 : 9
  3. 3 : 2
  4. 2 : 3
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 2 : 3

Explanation: If they meet after t hours, the X-train then covers the Y-train's distance: (S_Y × t)/S_X = 9 and (S_X × t)/S_Y = 4. Dividing, (S_X/S_Y)² = 4/9, so S_X : S_Y = 2 : 3.
