Syllogisms question 29

Statements:
Some apples are mangoes.
All mangoes are grapes.
No grape is a lemon.
Conclusions:
I. Some apples are lemons.
II. No apple is a lemon.
Assuming the statements to be true, which conclusion(s) logically follow(s)?

  1. Only conclusion I follows
  2. Only conclusion II follows
  3. Neither I nor II follows
  4. Either I or II follows
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. Either I or II follows

Explanation: The apples that are mangoes are grapes and so not lemons, but other apples may or may not be lemons, so neither conclusion follows by itself. I and II are complementary, so either I or II follows.
