Problems on Ages · Question 21 · Medium

The present ages of A and B are in the ratio 4 : 3. Six years ago, their ages were in the ratio 7 : 5. What is A's present age?

  1. 36 years
  2. 48 years
  3. 42 years
  4. 28 years
Answer and explanation

Answer: B. 48 years

Explanation: Let the ages be 4k and 3k. 5(4k − 6) = 7(3k − 6) gives 20k − 30 = 21k − 42, so k = 12. A = 48 years (six years ago 42 : 30 = 7 : 5).
