Boats & Streams question 28
A boat goes downstream from A to B and then comes back upstream to C, which is midway between A and B. The whole trip takes 22 hours. The boat's speed in still water is 16 km/h and the stream flows at 4 km/h. What is the distance from A to B?
- 264 km
- 200 km
- 220 km
- 240 km
Answer and explanation
Answer: D. 240 km
Explanation: Downstream speed = 20 km/h and upstream speed = 12 km/h. D/20 + (D/2)/12 = 22, i.e. D/20 + D/24 = 22, so 11D/120 = 22 and D = 240 km.
