Boats & Streams question 25
Two ferries start at the same time from ghats X and Y, 60 km apart on a river that flows from X towards Y at 3 km/h, and head towards each other. Their speeds in still water are 12 km/h and 18 km/h. After how long do they meet?
- 2 hours
- 1 2/3 hours
- 2 1/2 hours
- 2 2/9 hours
Answer and explanation
Answer: A. 2 hours
Explanation: The ferry going downstream gains 3 km/h and the one going upstream loses 3 km/h, so their closing speed is just 12 + 18 = 30 km/h, whichever ferry is going downstream. Time = 60 ÷ 30 = 2 hours.
