Boats & Streams question 24

Ishaan rows to a ghat 30 km away and back in 8 hours. He finds he can row 5 km downstream in the same time as 3 km upstream. What is the speed of the stream?

  1. 1 km/h
  2. 4 km/h
  3. 3 km/h
  4. 2 km/h
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 2 km/h

Explanation: Downstream and upstream speeds are in the ratio 5 : 3, say 5k and 3k. Then 30/(5k) + 30/(3k) = 8, i.e. 16/k = 8, so k = 2: downstream 10 km/h, upstream 6 km/h. Stream = (10 − 6)/2 = 2 km/h.
