Mixtures & Alligation question 28

A vessel contains milk and water in the ratio 5 : 3. When 16 litres of the mixture is drawn off and replaced with water, the ratio becomes 3 : 5. How many litres did the vessel hold?

  1. 32 litres
  2. 48 litres
  3. 64 litres
  4. 40 litres
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 40 litres

Explanation: After removal the remaining (T − 16) litres keep the 5 : 3 ratio; then 16 L water is added. 5 × (5/8)(T − 16) = 3 × [(3/8)(T − 16) + 16] gives (25 − 9)/8 × (T − 16) = 48, so T − 16 = 24 and T = 40 litres.
