Pipes & Cisterns question 28
A pipe can fill a tank in 10 hours. When the tank was half full, a leak developed, and as a result the tank took 3 hours longer than usual to fill. How long would the leak alone take to empty the full tank?
- 13 1/3 hours
- 30 hours
- 16 hours
- 26 2/3 hours
Answer and explanation
Answer: D. 26 2/3 hours
Explanation: The first half took 5 hours, so the second half took 13 − 5 = 8 hours: net rate = (1/2) ÷ 8 = 1/16. Leak rate = 1/10 − 1/16 = 3/80, so the leak empties the tank in 80/3 = 26 2/3 hours.
