Problems on Trains question 12

A train overtakes two people walking in the same direction as the train at 2 km/h and 4 km/h, taking 9 seconds and 10 seconds respectively. What is the speed of the train?

  1. 36 km/h
  2. 24 km/h
  3. 20 km/h
  4. 22 km/h
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 22 km/h

Explanation: Let the speed be v km/h. Length = (v − 2) × 5/18 × 9 = (v − 4) × 5/18 × 10, so 9v − 18 = 10v − 40 and v = 22 km/h (train length 50 m).

Previous: A 360 m long train running at 72 km/h takes 36 seconds to pass completely… · Next: Station Y is 330 km from station X. A train leaves X for Y at 7 AM at 60 km/h…
