Data Sufficiency question 27
Each question has two statements. Decide whether the data in the statements is sufficient to answer the question.
Question: Is x greater than y? (x and y are integers.)
I. x + y = 10.
II. x − y = 4.
- Statement I alone is sufficient
- Statement II alone is sufficient
- Both statements together are needed
- Both statements together are not sufficient
Answer and explanation
Answer: B. Statement II alone is sufficient
Explanation: II alone gives x = y + 4, so x is greater than y. I alone allows both cases (e.g. 7 and 3, or 3 and 7). So II alone is sufficient, even though both together would also give the values.
