Computer Networks question 15

A TCP sender has a congestion window of 16 MSS, with the whole window in flight, when a retransmission timeout occurs. Following standard TCP congestion control (Tahoe/Reno), what are the new ssthresh and cwnd?

  1. ssthresh = 16 MSS, cwnd = 8 MSS
  2. ssthresh = 8 MSS, cwnd = 8 MSS
  3. ssthresh = 4 MSS, cwnd = 1 MSS
  4. ssthresh = 8 MSS, cwnd = 1 MSS
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. ssthresh = 8 MSS, cwnd = 1 MSS

Explanation: On a timeout, ssthresh is set to half the data in flight (16 / 2 = 8 MSS) and cwnd drops to 1 MSS. The sender then restarts slow start. Setting cwnd to about ssthresh is the fast-recovery response to three duplicate ACKs, not to a timeout.
