Pipes & Cisterns question 23
Pipes A, B and C together fill a tank in 4 hours. After all three have run for 2 hours, C is closed, and A and B fill the rest of the tank in 3 more hours. How long would C alone take to fill the tank?
- 6 hours
- 10 hours
- 12 hours
- 8 hours
Answer and explanation
Answer: C. 12 hours
Explanation: In 2 hours all three fill 2/4 = 1/2. A and B fill the other 1/2 in 3 hours, so A + B = 1/6 per hour. C = 1/4 − 1/6 = 1/12 per hour, i.e. 12 hours.
