Time, Speed & Distance question 27
A cyclist rides uphill at 12 km/h and downhill at 18 km/h. The road from A to B is 6 km uphill followed by 9 km downhill. How long does a round trip A → B → A take?
- 2 hours 5 minutes
- 2 hours
- 1 hour 50 minutes
- 2 hours 10 minutes
Answer and explanation
Answer: A. 2 hours 5 minutes
Explanation: A to B: 6/12 + 9/18 = 1 hour. On the way back the 9 km is uphill and the 6 km downhill: 9/12 + 6/18 = 3/4 + 1/3 = 13/12 hours. Total = 25/12 hours = 2 hours 5 minutes.
