Time, Speed & Distance question 30
Rani has to catch a train at a station 3 km from her home. She walks the first 1 km at 4 km/h and realises that at this speed she would miss the train by 10 minutes. She then speeds up and reaches the station 5 minutes before the train leaves. What was her speed for the remaining distance?
- 10 km/h
- 8 km/h
- 6 km/h
- 7.5 km/h
Answer and explanation
Answer: B. 8 km/h
Explanation: At 4 km/h the whole 3 km takes 45 minutes, which is 10 minutes late, so she had 35 minutes. Arriving 5 minutes early means she took 30 minutes in all; the first km took 15 minutes, so the other 2 km took 15 minutes: 2 ÷ (1/4) = 8 km/h.
