Time, Speed & Distance question 28

Three runners start together from the same point on a 1,200 m circular track and run in the same direction at 4 m/s, 6 m/s and 9 m/s. After how many seconds will all three be together again for the first time?

  1. 240 seconds
  2. 400 seconds
  3. 600 seconds
  4. 1,200 seconds
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 1,200 seconds

Explanation: The other two runners gain on the slowest at 2 m/s and 5 m/s, so all three are together when 2t and 5t are both multiples of 1,200: t must be a multiple of 600 and of 240. The least such t is LCM(600, 240) = 1,200 seconds.
