Problems on Trains question 26

Two trains, 140 m and 160 m long, run in the same direction on parallel tracks. The faster one, at 72 km/h, completely passes the slower one in 60 seconds. What is the speed of the slower train?

  1. 48 km/h
  2. 18 km/h
  3. 60 km/h
  4. 54 km/h
Answer and explanation

Answer: D. 54 km/h

Explanation: Relative speed = (140 + 160) ÷ 60 = 5 m/s = 18 km/h. The slower train's speed = 72 − 18 = 54 km/h.

Previous: A train runs at 80 km/h without stoppages and averages 60 km/h including… · Next: A train passes a man walking at 3 km/h in the same direction in 10 seconds…
