Puzzles question 29

Five friends Farhan, Gauri, Harsh, Isha and Jyoti are of different ages and come from five different cities: Bhopal, Indore, Kochi, Lucknow and Mysuru.
Isha is the youngest. Farhan is younger than Jyoti. Gauri is older than Jyoti but younger than the person from Indore. When the five are arranged from youngest to oldest, the person from Lucknow comes immediately after the person from Kochi. The person from Bhopal is older than Farhan. Neither Isha nor Jyoti is from Mysuru.
How many of the friends are older than the person from Lucknow?

  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. 3
  4. 1
Answer and explanation

Answer: C. 3

Explanation: From youngest to oldest: Isha (Kochi), Farhan (Lucknow), Jyoti (Bhopal), Gauri (Mysuru), Harsh (Indore). The age order is fixed as Isha, Farhan, Jyoti, Gauri, Harsh, and only Harsh can be from Indore. Bhopal must be Jyoti or Gauri; the Kochi-Lucknow pair must be consecutive and Mysuru cannot be Isha or Jyoti, which leaves only this assignment. Farhan, from Lucknow, is second youngest, so Jyoti, Gauri and Harsh are older.
