Data Sufficiency question 12

Each question has two statements. Decide whether the data in the statements is sufficient to answer the question.
Question: What is the two-digit number?
I. The sum of its digits is 9.
II. The number is 9 more than the number formed by reversing its digits.

  1. Statement I alone is sufficient
  2. Statement II alone is sufficient
  3. Both statements together are needed
  4. Both statements together are not sufficient
Answer and explanation

Answer: C. Both statements together are needed

Explanation: II gives tens digit − units digit = 1; I gives their sum = 9. Together the digits are 5 and 4, so the number is 54. Each alone has several solutions (e.g. 18, 27 for I; 21, 32 for II).
