Data Sufficiency question 13

Each question has two statements. Decide whether the data in the statements is sufficient to answer the question.
Question: Is x greater than y? (x and y are real numbers)
I. x² > y².
II. x > 0.

  1. Statement I alone is sufficient
  2. Statement II alone is sufficient
  3. Both statements together are needed
  4. Both statements together are not sufficient
Answer and explanation

Answer: C. Both statements together are needed

Explanation: I alone fails (x = −3, y = 1 gives x < y). II alone says nothing about y. Together, x > 0 and x² > y² give x > |y| ≥ y, so x > y.
