Data Sufficiency question 15

Each question has two statements. Decide whether the data in the statements is sufficient to answer the question.
Question: A company has 60 employees. How many of them speak Hindi?
I. 35 employees speak English.
II. 20 employees speak English but not Hindi, and every employee speaks at least one of Hindi and English.

  1. Statement I alone is sufficient
  2. Statement II alone is sufficient
  3. Both statements together are needed
  4. Both statements together are not sufficient
Answer and explanation

Answer: B. Statement II alone is sufficient

Explanation: From II, everyone who does not speak Hindi speaks English only, and there are 20 such employees, so 60 − 20 = 40 speak Hindi. I alone does not tell us the overlap.
