Question: What is Rahul's rank from the top in a class of 40 students?
I. Rahul is 25th from the bottom.
II. Rahul is 5 ranks above Mohan.

  1. Statement I alone is sufficient
  2. Statement II alone is sufficient
  3. Both statements together are needed
  4. Both statements together are not sufficient
Answer and explanation

Answer: A. Statement I alone is sufficient

Explanation: From I, rank from top = 40 − 25 + 1 = 16th, so I alone is sufficient. II only compares Rahul with Mohan, whose rank is unknown.
