Farida and Gopal together can finish a job in 10 days. They work together for 4 days, then Farida leaves and Gopal finishes the rest alone in 9 days. How many days would Farida take to do the whole job alone?

  1. 20 days
  2. 30 days
  3. 25 days
  4. 15 days
Answer and explanation

Explanation: In 4 days they finish 4/10 = 2/5; Gopal does the remaining 3/5 in 9 days, so his rate is 1/15. Farida's rate = 1/10 − 1/15 = 1/30, i.e. 30 days.
